Thanks all, I will look into these.  And Bonnie, thank you for the
generous offer; this is a little down the road, and he might require
'g', but I'll hold on to your email!

Also, I forgot that I have a little TrendNet USB 802.11g adapter that
worked (with WPA) without any manual wpa_supplicant/nidswrapper/etc.
jazz, using networkmanager under Edgy.  The model name escapes me, but
I can loan it to him to test under Feisty.
