I agree with you, but I've also found that the further you've gone in 
your education the more learning is up to yourself.  It just seems the 
further you go, the more of a crap shoot it is (from an employer's 
perspective) whether or not you're getting someone skilled or not.  At 
least that's my impression:  an education doesn't guarantee skill in a 
certain area.  So as I'm going through graduate school now, and I'm 
doing it for myself, I'm actually learning a lot because I care about 
the subject matter and not just about passing the class.  You get what 
you put into it.

So to that end, you really are paying for your degree:  the degree 
itself doesn't represent much else in terms of technical skills.
