[Novalug] Knoppix install??

I have a testbed machine (old P2 from 1998) that still
runs, but is awful slow with FC6. (I have other uses for it, if I
can speed it up, besides as a testbed; e.g., running whatever
word processor my wife settles on for her next book, so that I
can fiddle with it as occasions arise ...)
I've tried Puppy Linux, but can't seem to get it to
configure as I want -- nor install. Damn Small Linux is over my
head. Knoppix might serve, despite being (apparently) locked into
KDE (which happens to grate on me) -- but there seems to be no
way to install it.
Is this really so? You can't put Knoppix onto a hard
drive even if you want to? Or am I missing something?
Or does anyone favor some other minimal OS?
