I had the same problem. Fixed it with mapping. I'm running openSuse 10.3 on 
individual SATA HD and XPPro on another separate drive.

my windows section of the GRUB Menu looks like this:

###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: windows 1###
title windows xp
    map (hd0) (hd1)
    map (hd1) (hd0)
    root (hd1,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1

it works just fine.
