[Novalug] Asus EeePC vs Nokia 810

Steve,

given that, for the time being, at least, Nokia plans to maintain the
N800 on the same OS baseline as the N810 (called OS2008) the decision
to purchase the N810 vs the N800 should, as you suggest, be based on
genuine user requirements. The same cannot be said for the Nokia 770
(predecessor to the N800) which will NOT run OS2008 and should be
considered an EOL (end of life) product from a software development
perspective.

Nokia is simultaneously releasing the OS upgrade to the N800 at the time
that the N810 goes on sale (today, or at least this week, I think) so
if you purchase an N800 today that has OS2007 installed, you can upgrade
it to OS2008 via an Internet download from the Nokia N800 www site whose
url is:

       http://europe.nokia.com/A4305010

As a N800 user I have found the soft keyboard/thumboard to be less than
ideal although I have "lived with" that limitation.

Regarding the comparison of features between the two products I should
add that the N810 has a higher performance processor than the N800. On
the other hand, Nokia removed a few features from the N810 that are in
the N800. The two of which I am aware are:

        * The N800 supports two removable SD memory cards whereas the
          N810 only supports one
        * The N800 has an FM radio whereas the N810 does not. The FM
radio was an easter egg that resulted from the fact that the
bluetooth chip used on the N800 also has an FM radio on the
          silicon.

One other important feature to many users, myself included, that will
be supported for sure in the N810, is the capability to pair a bluetooth
headset with the N810. I am less certain of whether or not this feature
will work on the N800 after upgrading to OS2008, although I hope it does.

I should add that, for those interested in Ruby, that there is a "port"
of Ruby that will run on the N800 running OS2007. Here is the url to the
www page for that software:
