[Novalug] Kununtu admin question

List,

Although I have been using Ubuntu exclusively for some time, I laid
hands on a used computer (with respectable specs), I decided to give
Kubuntu a try. It installed ok, but I haven't tried to do much with it.
I was waiting for a Linux compatible network card. It came in so I took
the computer to Advanced2000, a shop in Alexandria and told them to put
it in.

Here is what happened: When Kubuntu boots it fills in the username I
specified, then waits for the password. I keyed that in, the boot screen
disappeared and I left. When I installed it I specified only one
username and one password, which I assumed would be the original name
and password. ... The way I understand it is that Ubuntu regards the
first username entered as root and thus the first password as the root
password. Thus, it would be up to me to designate a group (or more than
one) and a user (or more than one).

But when I got home there was a phone call waiting. The tech says that
what I gave him was the username and the username's password. He needs
the system administrator's name and password.

Hunh!? What is happening?
