[Novalug] External USB Drives/Linux

Hi All,
This may be slightly off-topic... I just recently picked up an external
Seagate 750G USB drive that was on sale at Best Buy. It came formatted with
NTFS and I had to reformat it with ext3. Everyting worked great - it
automounted on my FC6 based system.

A couple of things surprised me about this drive. First, it is nearly dead
silent. Second - I cannot believe the amount of heat this thing generates. I
was going to put it behind a glass stereo case along with the MythTV box
that it is attached to. But considering the amount of heat it puts out I
decided to place it on top of the stereo cabinet so that the heat could
dissipate more easily. I can't imagine placing a disk like this inside a
computer case - that would really cook - and I don't mean that in a good
way! Has anyone else noticed this?

BTW, I was playing around with an old 80G external drive that I have - it is
a little loud - but the case is cold to the touch. One other annoying thing
I recently discovered - the directions for this old USB drive say that it
cannot have NTFS formatted on it. It must use FAT32 - with the 4G file size
limitation that implies. Would anyone hazard a guess as to whether one could
format this old 80G USB drive with ext3?

Thanks,

Kevin
