[Novalug] best way to back up a home partition.

I have been running ubuntu for over a year and am using gutsy
(bleeding edge for desktop) and haven't had the issue. I watch what it
wants to do and
   aptitude update
   aptitude dist-upgrade
      (decide if I like what it is going to do)
has worked.  

I did break a debian awhile ago (years) w/ an X update that took X
away
