Different policies for different locales.
In my former NJ county (Mercer) we recycled both
sealed lead/acid batteries and the standard cells.
They could either be dropped off in boxes at the
gov't bldgs or some office supply stores or they
could be put in plastic zipper bags clearly labeled
for the normal recycler pickup.
BTW car batteries could be disposed of on special
"hazardous waste days" held several times a year.
They also took stains, paints, fertilizers, herb-
and pesticides, acids, solvents, etc.
