This link was a good bit of advice, I disabled power management in the
bios, and got around a bad cd rom drive, but still have a bad burn of
the iso, so am torrenting down the alternate cd for 6.06 xubuntu and
alternate for 7.10. I was able to get the live version of Ubuntu and
knoppix running with power management disabled. Thanks for all the
suggestions. Once again, duh, it comes down to reading the error
message and googling. Of course friendly advice is always a help.
