dual/quad/etc doesn't matter. It is the bits that matter when it comes
to the OS. Since Itanium is dead, that gets rid of that discussion.

32bit OS will boot on 64bit hardware
64bit OS will NOT boot on 32bit hardware

Don't worry about cores.

Or at least I believe the above statements to be true
