Um, so where should they discharge it?

After 18 years on Fairfax County water, I'm back in New England with a
well and everything I learned 24 years ago is probably obsolete now. I
remember both the well guy and the septic guy telling me that with
modern detergents and everything else that goes down the drain,
keeping the bacteria alive is a forlorn hope, and we all just pump out
the tanks when they fill up. Sounded kinda pointless to me at the time
but I had no better information.

What's the real scoop?
