Be sure to point out that there are bigger and more
frequent conventions (Believe it or not!) than the politicals --
lots of them.
At one time, the Modern Language Association (the whole
professoriate of English and *all* the foreign languages) used
to hold a single unified convention -- very useful for the slave
market -- and had to alternate between Chicago and NYC, because
no other cities had enough hotel space.
That was reputed the biggest of all. But there must be
lots of them not a whale of a lot smaller; the job markets favor
such, and not only in academia.
