Joseph,
You can set up VNC in that manner -- when an independent client connects,
they get a GDM or KDM screen to login, their independent session starts and
other connected clients are uninterupted. X has the facility built in; the
client PCs can use GDM, KDM, XDM to log into a remote X session and do the
same. This is really what X and Linux were built for from the beginning :)
