In response to my description of symlinking /etc/alternatives/editor
to a script that invokes emacs in a terminal, Kevin wrote:

What's overkill, putting a one-liner into a script or symlinking
/etc/alternatives/editor to it?
I agree in either case; I just didn't know a way to guarantee that (a)
emacs doesn't open in a window and (b) invoking a generic editor will
always open emacs, in straight Debian or *ubuntu.
If the EDITOR environment variable is more or less universal and can
do (a), that certainly seems simpler and more elegant.
