[Novalug] KDE 4.1 rough edges (cold install of Kubuntu 8.10 on IBM T42)

My experience with the newest KDE release has been uneven. I have
persevered with the usual gratuitous changes in the user interface and
haven't completely given up. Issues to be worked around:

- install script bug: if you boot into the desktop so you can establish
a network connection, the install script skips the 3rd screen that
allows for manual partitioning; the next screen would normally have the
existing partitions but is blank. Workaround: Install w/o network
connection & upgrade after boot.

- tends to hang on boot if trying to establish a fixed IP address; dhcp
works fine

- Task scheduler works ok for my user account but there doesn't seem to
be a way to invoke it with root privilege. If you copy a set of root
tasks to /var/spool/cron/crontab/, kde doesn't execute them.
Workaround: append root tasks to the /etc/crontab file.

- Slow

YMMV
