I have spent quite a bit of time trying to find something online about 
this and have not been successful.

I am trying to fix a computer belonging to a friend. Neither of the DVD 
drives would open.

The computer is a 2005 Gateway with windows XP.

I got the DVD ROM to open ok using the straightened paper clip trick but 
the DVD R/W does not have a little hole in the front for a paperclip ( 
will repeat this :-) because every one I have asked this question of 
immediately says - poke a paper clip in the little hole - IT DOES NOT 
have the little hole for the paper clip) :-)

So i removed it from the computer and looked for some other thing that 
might trigger it open. This R/WDVD is a Toshiba TS-H552 manufactured 
in April of 2005.


The case has a plate on one side - the bottom as it is mounted in for 
use with 4 little screws so I took that plate off which allowed me to 
look at the circuit board, cables and varius innards but did not seem to 
have any obvious drawer release lever. I poked and proded at a few things 
but I did not want to break anything.

The front of the case HAS NO LITTLE HOLE FOR A PAPER CLIP. I found 4 
plastic tabs - two on the bottom and two on the side which seem to be 
locks for the front plastic cover of the drive. However even when these 
are disengaged there is something attaching the front plate to the top of 
the drive and I am afraid that if I force the removal I will break 
something.

Have any of you dissembled a Toshiba TS H552 DVD R/W?
