i think another problem with fat is the permissions.  for one thing,
the permissions are based on the uid of the mounter, not on individual
uid/gid's on each of the files (there are none).  aren't all the file
modes the same too?  i don't use it enough to remember accurately.
this may be an issue for you to review.
