Try the command:
lspci | grep Eth
My copper Gb recepticle on the mother board appears as:
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 80003ES2LAN Gigabit
Ethernet Controller (Copper)
04:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 80003ES2LAN Gigabit
Ethernet Controller (Copper)
This should show you what hw is in the PCI bus for ethernet function.

The dmesg file usually shows a driver to be used.
My ethernet entries are:
