Are you sure it's not an SELinux issue? Disable SE and see if that won't
fix itself. Also, make sure that the directories about modules.dep are
accessible. Last but not least could a non-root use be trying to depmod ??

I've NEVER seen this problem with RH/Fedora before. Are you sure the
install completed without hickups?
