You've pinpointed your problem right there: bad memory.

No, but bad memory can. There used to be a linux-ecc project where
bad memory pages would be mapped out, allowing you to use imperfect RAM
modules. But that requires some way to detect the bad pages, e.g. ECC -
not common in laptops/desktops.
