Well, Norfolk - Virginia Beach - Newport News area... plenty of gov't jobs
still. Some private jobs, but I don't see many that pay real well. There
are a few, and a few startup style companies (I'm fortunate to work for
one).
Cost of living used to be really low, but housing costs have more than
doubled in a few years. I expect for it to full reverse. A good number of
people cashed out of other areas to move here, I imagine they will leave
because the region is somewhat soulless.
Most of the jobs are gov't contractors (the usuals, SAIC, Lockheed,
General Dynamics, EDS, etc.). The region has a reputation (and cities
actually marketed the area this way) as having a cheap but skilled
workforce.
Outside of work, there are a number of user groups. Your more likely to
hear about how to play a dvd in Linux versus say, enterprise network and
server management with Hyperic. And I doubt 5% of the people in our local
UNIX user group knows what a SAN is.
