that'll work, but you might want to try the more traditional commands.
'cp -a' for one works pretty good, but it's not available on all systems
(if this is linux you're good to go).  i think 'cp -rp' will do bad things
with symlinks.  the other useful command is 'rsync -a' which also copies
pretty straight forward w/o all that tar and piping business.

that aside, tried and true is a nice warm feeling.
