[Novalug] EeePC/F8 update

One of the respins that were passed out at the last
VTLUUG installfest seemed for a while to have saved me; now I'm
not so sure.

Some of you will recall that the ASUS EeePC's Xandros
came with a vulnerability in its Samba, which I learned of at
once here when I bought one.

Ever since then I've been grappling with one distro after
another : EeeDora (first -- of course), Ubuntu 6 & 7, Debian in a
couple forms, DSL, Puppy in a couple, and more besides. I got to
a point where it looked like the only hope would be to compile a
driver myself -- and compiling is something I steer strictly
clear of.

Then I discovered that a very recent kernel now included
F8 support for the driver(s) I needed. Sure enough, the kernel I
had was a bunch earlier.

I pulled out one of the respins ; it finished the
upgrade, but still fails to connect.

Service network restart gets as far as trying eth0, then
reports failure : "3c501 device eth0 does not seem to be present
..."

So is this still the driver problem? Or ...??
