[Novalug] Advantages of server based on CentOS/Ubuntu, etc?

I was advised to download Ubuntu server, and install it on a box, to get prepared for hosting my own web pages and domain names. Ok.. this is going to be a fun learning curve... ... gggulp.
   
  Is there any advantages of one lnux server over the others?
   
  Yeah, I know, its a loaded question. However, it is one of those loaded questions, that I always learn a lot from based on the guru/guru-ette responses thru this group.
