Dennis asked about setting up a Brother HL-5170DN laser printer with
Kubuntu.
Important: make sure your user account is a member of the lpadmin
group, or you won't be able to set up the printer.
Once you do that (don't forget to log out and back in) the rest should
be easy:
1. From the K menu, open System Settings. I don't think you need to
switch to Administrator Mode, but try that if this fails.
2. Select Printers.
3. Select Add, then Add Printer/Class.
4. Select Network Printer (TCP) and hit Next.
5. Use the Scan feature to try to find available printers; if it
fails, enter the printer's IP address manually.
6. Select the printer and hit Next.
7. Wait for the driver list to appear (this can take a while), then
ignore the list and click the Postscript Printer box (that's what
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Brother-HL-5170DN
recommends). Click Next.
8. Test the printer, then click Next.
9. Unless you need banners, click Next again.
10. Unless you need quotas, click Next again.
11. Unless you want to block any users, click Next again.
12. Give the printer a name and click Next.
13. Review settings, click Finish.
That should do it.
