I've been using Fedora in combination with Freshrpms for years. Fedora is
the base operating system and follows very good principles of free software,
avoiding anything that might have patents (etc). Freshrpms provides plugins,
new software and replacements for items that Fedora doesn't offer. Together
they make a very easy to use and satisfying linux environment that is easy to
setup and easy to maintain.
With my recent upgrade to Fedora 8 I switched from using Freshrpms to livna
which actually has more rpms than freshrpms. So to do what I do:
1) Install Fedora
2) Run the software updater to get all patches applied
3) go to the rpm.livna.org site and download (then install) their rpm that
configures your fedora system to use their rpm repository.
4) run pirut and marvelle at all the extra packages and toys available from
livna...
5) Run the software updater on a regular basis and all your fedora and livna
rpms will be updated automatically.
This is really good setup and the kind of environment people have been
applauding for years in regards to Debian's 'apt' package manager..
