 	I may be in trouble, then. What I know of kernels would 
go in a gnat's eye; and Grub drives me to despair any time I 
don't have an exact recipe for what to put into /etc/grub.conf -- 
such as mapping hd(1,0) onto hd(01) and vice versa, to enable a 
machine to dual boot Fedora and XP

 	Been there, done that (and didn't like it, then at 
least). The point of this present exercise is to try two 
things : adding on apps not in the distro already, and doing 
updating.

 	CentOS with epel is already doing a lot better than last 
time I tried it (from a live CD, iirc, just to get a look). Maybe 
Ubuntu will, too.
