Thanks but I can not take credit - I read about that somewhere else . . . I
think.
I also keep /home on a separate partition so I can transfer files from one
install to the next, being careful to delete .folder files that have config
info in them. One especially handy one to keep: the directories for Firefox
and Thunderbird profiles, which include preferences, mail and address
books. But, I would not SHARE these and other partitions between distros.
