Roger,
re, your question
".....are *you* aware of a good contact manager
/ PIM for the N800? More importantly, a means of transferring data from
the Palm PIMs to an N800 PIM?"
it turns out that, Access, the current owners of the Palm Software
Intellectual Property and OS, have developed a virtual machine
environment called Garnet, to run the Palm OS and applications and,
furthermore, there is a version of that VM that runs on the Nokia N770,
N800, and the new N810 Internet Tablet computers. I have not yet tried
Garnet myself but I understand that other Internet Tablet users have
used it and seem to be satisfied with how it works. Clearly, former Palm
users who have previously invested in apps to run on the Palm OS will
gain the most from using Garnet. Here is the url to the www site for the
version of Garnet that runs on the Nokia Internet Tablet computers:
http://www.access-company.com/products/gvm/
If you decided to proceed with purchasing an N810, which already has the
latest Nokia OS (OS 2008) installed, or an N800 that has been upgraded
to OS 2008, you will get the best performance out of Garnet because the
2008 version of the Nokia OS actually takes advantage of the variable
clocking capability of the hardware to dramatically improve processor
throughput without seriously compromising battery life.
Of course, even if you purchase an N800 with the older software (which
is likely if the box has been "on the shelf" for more than a few weeks)
you can obtain the upgraded OS2008 at the Nokia www site. Here is the
url to the www page for the N800 OS2008 software which www page will
work only if you have your Nokia product ID handy:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N800.php?f=RX-34_2008SE_1.2007.50-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin
Once you get the binary image on your computer, you can find the
instructions for performing the firmware upgrade at the Nokia N800/N810
www site. Here is the url to that www page:

I'll keep this tip tucked away in case I get an N800. I've been eying
them for awhile . . .

Even better tip - I take it that's with showing your military I.D.? (I
wonder if they discount to retirees too.)
NOW, a question: I've been thinking of replacing my Palm Zire sometime;
it's inevitable since I'm approaching the tail-end of battery life
ability to hold a charge). So: I read about add-ons software and know
the N800 is not sold as a PIM. Are *you* aware of a good contact manager
/ PIM for the N800? More importantly, a means of transferring data from
the Palm PIMs to an N800 PIM?
Thanks.
