I don't know about the high end, but we have been building alot of systems based on the ASUS M2N-MX SE (AM2 socket). This is very low cost ($55) and does not have SLI, but it runs Ubuntu perfectly and the on-board Nvidia 6100 graphics work great with Beryl. We have been using them for about a year and have not had any come back yet...

Now that 2GB RAM is about $40, you can put together a dual core chip, motherboard, ram, and hard disk for under $200!

Subject: [Novalug] Motherboard Choices
Hi all,
I'm faced with a dying motherboard. Well, a dying chipset fan to be
exact. It's an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe. I've been a fan of Asus for a
long
time as far as hardware goes, but I've been disappointed lately. This
is the second Asus board in a row to have the chipset fan die with just
over a year of operation.
The first one was turned on all day after the fan died on its own. I
came home to a crispy north bridge :)
Luckily, I caught this one in time and have given it some TLC to keep
it
alive until I can either replace the board or the fan itself. I'm not
sure whether the fan uses a proprietary connector, though.
My question is this -- what boards and other manufacturers do you
suggest? Perhaps staying away from a chipset fan is the better idea
here, and if I decide to go that route with a new board, I'll likely
choose Asus again.
Existing hardware is an AMD 4200X2, socket 939. 2GB DDR400 RAM,
PCI-Express graphics.
I haven't yet decided whether to take this as a sign to upgrade the
rest
of the hardware as well or not.
Thoughts?
-- Mike
