That is certainly what the error message means. But now
it refuses to look at anything in the CD drive, even though I do
hear that spin.

I must have had a neatness fit recently : all my old
install CDs are gone. You might know it.
But I did find a pair from RedHat 6 For Dummies -- and
even that gets only the wrong-kernel message. Surely that, if
nothing else, proves it isn't even seeing its own CD drive any
more??
