[Novalug] LDAP or Not? / How Populate LDAP Address Book?

I'm moving to a new hosting service and this is an ideal time to
consider switching gears to LDAP. But, I don't know how to populate the
server-side address book! Looking for feedback on the following issues:

My email client is Thunderbird and I've hundreds of addresses in about
20 different address books - maintained for different mailing lists /
purposes. So, LDAP is an appealing choice to help maintain address books
in the future.

I find only one means of (easily?) scyning existing T-bird address books
with an LDAP server: "Addressbooks Synchronizer,"
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/2533

Any suggestions on how to synch address books?

I'm about to give-up on using LDAP with the hosting services
Squirrelmail implementation - LDAP doesn't seem to be implemented thereon.
