[Novalug] Formatting USB thumb drives

Couple of weeks ago I bought two of the Microcenter branded 2GB USB thumb
drives. I thought that I would format them to prevent the possibility of them
having a virus on them.

Is that necessary, and if so how would you go about this?  I want these drives
usable by Windows (for work) and Linux/Windows at home.

I know how to format the drive, I really am just asking if others have bought
the same thumb drives and if you knew of any reason why I should NOT format
them (or why I SHOULD format them).
