rather than redeveloping another backed IM-style communications system
you might consider using open aim (along with open id). coming up
with a better front-end to an existing backend might save you
time/effort. you can take a look at the various
APIs that AOL has made available for this sort of thing at:
http://dev.aol.com/
open id is also something that might be useful to you in that you
might be able to use existing account auth systems that people are
members of rather than having to create and manage accounts of your
own.
i'm not a pro by any means on this subject (as usual) but you might
find the info useful.
