[Novalug] Ubuntu 8.04 - wallpaper and desktop items have disappeared

TO be clear, this is a GNOME issue and NOT UBUNTU in my experience. I
do not know what Jim did, but I have hosed gnome on more systems than I
can to remember.
and that GNOME REQUIRES Evolution, don't get me started. Don't even get
me started.
Maybe gentoo is the distro I need to look into.
