[Novalug] Where is Linux today?

JL,

I've been installing Linux since the days of floppy disk sets.

While it is easier to install now than it was back then, (mostly because one
bad FD would screw you) it still is painful.

For example, when I tried to install Suse 10.3 on my box for the first time, I
did not do a "default install" (meaning just installing whatever packages had
been marked for install) as I tried to actually remove and add packages during
package selection. The result was a totally broken system, the root and user
modules failed, meaning I had no users on the system, not could I add them
after a reboot. The type of packages I would mark as "don't install" for
example would be the development group.

I'm sorry, THAT CRAP shouldn't ever happen. Adding and removing packages to
me is a very BASIC step during installation, else why would you NOT have all
packages marked for install. Its so you have choices...

So, not sure why you mention "selective amnesia", but you are free to elaborate.
