Sarah,
thank you for the 'pingdom' link. Right on top I see
"1.5 % of the Open Source community is female"
(according to a 2006 study, bla-bla, conditions, etc.).

The original question, why so few women in Open Source (and physics and
math and engineering and car repair and crane operators and pipe
welders, to name a few more) remains unanswered. Some women can do
well, perhaps very well, in any of those fields, just as you have some
men who do well in 'traditionally female' fields (like fashion
marketing and design and cosmetics and yes, management). But, that a
few do well doesn't say very much about the capabilities of the
typical, average, or median man or woman.
A related question: what about sexual preference? A recent article
in the paper reported that brains of heterosexual men light up
in the same places as homosexual females, and vice versa.
Life is interesting....
