[Novalug] My Ubuntu 8.04 upgrade experience

Not much better than when upgraded last year to 7.04, except system went the
whole way through the upgrade to restart. Checking Update Manager found
that there were some obvious lingering updates/upgrades/removals (not sure
which) that would only allow a partial update, which promptly failed. Tried
Synaptic also -- wouldn't start. So, searching the forums found "sudo
apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade" and "dpkg --configure -a". Tried
the Manager again several times hoping that at least one time would get
different results -- finally it did. Never underestimate the power of
wishful thinking. Well, that finished successfully, so I checked in with
Synaptic again and found that it would run now. I removed the "Not
installed (residual config)" items.
Things seem to be OK now. However, I did notice that before the upgrade I
had a little over 3 GB of freespace, and now am only left with just under
2. Is this upgrade that bloated? Or, are there leftovers that I can
delete?
D.
