[Novalug] Formatting SD card

Interesting problem:  my Palm T|X trashed the 2GB SD card that was in it.
Now attempting to reformat by the Palm results in an error.  And if I try to
format it under Windows XP, it gets most of the way through the process and
then fails in an error.  Is there a Linux command (preferably under Ubuntu
or Knoppix) which will unconditionally format the card?  Or is the card a
write-off?
