Wide screens are preferred because playback of video is going to be a
much more common activity in the future. After 2009 most video produced
will be HDTV which means wide screen format. So if you have a
widescreen monitor you'll be able to maximize the playback window and
view a larger HDTV image with no border or less border than a
traditional square monitor.

A widescreen monitor tilted on its side is ideal for programming and
some specific tasks, but for most of us, a widescreen is a much desired
and appreciated change of options. Count yourself in the minority if
you don't like them and get ready to change at some point

Your UPS should be providing power to its devices straight from the
electricity that comes from the wall during normal operation. Only when
the incoming wall power goes out does the battery kick in and start to
drain. So fill it up with electrical devices and it shouldn't be a
problem until the power goes out.
