A: You assume that a monitor that has a direct AC power cord doesn't go 
into a transformer, then go to the electornics. This could easily be the 
case.

B: A UPS, with nothing plugged into it, when running on batteries will 
kill itself in a fairly quick order. The inverter electronics have their 
own load.
