Is the deposit in more or less the same place every day? Dogs like to 
return and mark a place scent wise with feces as well as urine. Cleaning 
up the area and dosing it with one of those enzyme cleaners that 
denature odors may work if it is the same spot each time.

actually if the owner is with the dog, follow him/her home and then come 
back with the deposit in a plastic bag and leave it on the front step with 
a note asking for the owner to clean up after the pet.

Are you in an area with stray dogs or wild enough to have foxes?

If the poo is firm you can get a rough idea of the size of the dog by the 
volumn and the diameter. Healthy dogs normally only poo twice to 3 times 
a day.

There are people who have tracking dogs as a hobby (search and rescue) and 
most dog owners who are serious hobbyists do not like people who leave dog 
poo on other people's yards. So you might be able to find a person with a 
tracking dog to track the poo-er to its home.
