as to archival - black and white lazer is considered archival because
the carbon is bonded to the paper. however for an archival print you
also need to use acid free paper - high rag paper is also good to use.
to determine how permanent a particular lazer printer may be do a test
print and tape it image side out to a window that gets a lot of sun. you
can put a pirce of black paper across part of the print - examine it after
6 months or so and see what sort of fading you have.
photo prints themselves are not really archival - however a process
called dye transfer used in conjunctrion with photos is the most
for day to day color use a lazer is the least expensive these days
but the image can show regular areas of regular banding. a shingle mask is
a combination of software and hardware to reduce this
in my experience banding this is more common in lazer prints than in high
quality ink jet prints. it is most commonly noticable in large areas
of smooth tone - not in textured areas. this is why a lot of the sample
images printed for printer sales examples are very detailed textured type
images, not smooth tones or with gradual gradients.
