There are only 20 or so commands one needs to know in HTML to do a basic 
website. I have a tutorial here:

My suggestion is to look over a tutorial of this sort because even when 
you use a web page making program - they never do optimal web code and you 
often need to fix it anyway.

On a gnome desktop gedit will display the text version of a web page with 
helpful highlighting allowing you to edit a page from a text editor. at 
the same time you run your browser and load the pages to view the 
effects.  you can use the w3.org web page validator to check your pages 
for valid code.

Firefox does have a plug in for web page authorship.
