Turns out to be that the scripts were in the wrong place after
upgrading to Hardy:

I moved all to /etc/pm/sleep.d with successful resume of sound again
among others.  Running appropriate scripts under sudo was distracting
me; no need to run any sudo commands to get things back in action.
