Let them use the coax connection, from their interface box to their
router (which is where you apparently have a choice), and then you can
hang YOUR router off of THAT. They don't care what you use on the
"inside" from their router. I even disabled the wireless on theirs,
then added my own wireless router.
As for functionality, that's why you need to be using their router,
somewhere along the line. Apparently their system pulls program guide
info off the Internet, via their router, and back over to their FIOS
network interface box, whence it goes to the TV parts.
BTW, I've been very happy with FIOS service so far, and if you can get
through to the *repair* department instead of the *billing* or *customer
service* departments, they're clueful, helpful, and so on.
