I know what you mean.  I was surprised to see the error message from
``cat``, though it's a welcome addition.  In the past, I didn't remember
seeing any warning that things went wrong.  I was prepared to talk about
the subtlety of the problem based on the total lack of clues that
something went wrong, but when I tested it before posting I saw the
error message.  That's the great thing about this list, I always learn
something :-)
