[Novalug] pause in Ubuntu boot

Recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop.
At each reboot the splash screen clears,
about 25 boot notices (all [OK]) print,
and I'm asked to enter root password for
maintenance or ctrl-D to continue the boot.

I've seen this type of message when there
was a file system problem. But there is no
indication of any problem here.

I made another grub entry to show no splash
screen and all text messages. Still no error
stands out.

Any clue why it might behave this way?
