Period is not the only character that ends sentences and periods
may appear in things like IP addresses that are not the ends of
sentences.

btw left paren works back to the beginning of a sentence.  And
curly braces {} work back and forward for paragraphs.  However
as none of you use n/troff anymore, the only meaningful paragraph
definition is a blank line.  Extra credit for square brackets.
